Importance (why) update support X new

This is an article which highlights the disrespect often displayed towards women in online culture. The video posted by AFL players, supposed role models for young boys and men, was touted misogynistic and despicable. It highlights how much damage a 4 minute video, meant as a joke among mates, can do.

What (key words or phrases)

“An explicit video that was filmed in the clubrooms of the North Melbourne FC and posted online by one of the club’s young footballers has led to an investigation within the club.”

“Boris the toy chicken has a condom on its head and is manipulated to look as if it is penetrating the carcass of a real chicken...in the opening scene a sign of North Melbourne’s major sponsor, Mazda, is featured clearly.”

“Phil Cleary, a former footballer and long-time campaigner of violence against women, described the video as ‘disgracefully misogynistic’.”

Issues (agree/disagree)

The article could be used as a concrete example of how women are mistreated online and portrayed as sexual objects by men. While I think the article may be taking the video a little bit too seriously, and that the intentions of the players who posted probably had nothing to do with degrading women in the way that Lane and others quoted in the article are claiming, it is still a serious issue that obviously needs dealing with amongst these elite athletes.
