While checking the news this morning, I cam across this interesting article.
It talks about Google's new 'transparency report' which is really really interesting to have a quick flick through. It relates back to the discussions earlier in the semester about censorship on the net. Basically Google is providing the information about requests for removals/etc from national governments on a map where you can see how many requests there have been, how many Google responded to etc.
Well worth having a quick scan through.
I find it interesting that Brazil has the highest removal request rate of 398 with a 67.6% compliance. But most of these had to do with Orkut which is similar to Facebook but is based in Brazil and is a site which Brazilians frequented more than other social networking sites.
ReplyDeleteWhat I want to know is, that if most of the problems with compliance is related to Orkut does that mean there are more pages being requested for removal? or it's more difficult to take down someones social network page?
Facebook is huge in the US and Aus (at least) but the removal requests are lower with higher percentages. I just think that's interesting...
